An international meeting in the Czech Republic at the frontier of high-intensity laser science and its applications in medicine
Aukelos attended the Laserlab-Europe & Lasers4EU Annual and Users Meeting 2026, held from 26 to 29 May in Dolní Břežany, Czech Republic, at two of Europe’s most advanced laser research infrastructures: the HiLASE Centre and ELI Beamlines Facility. The meeting — organised jointly by the Laserlab-Europe AISBL and the Horizon Europe project Lasers4EU — serves as a central forum for networking and collaboration, bringing together representatives of leading research institutes, industry and early-stage researchers to discuss the latest developments in laser-based technologies and their scientific and industrial applications. The joint hosting by HiLASE and ELI Beamlines was particularly fitting: ELI Beamlines is one of the leading European centres for laser-driven particle acceleration, a field directly relevant to our work.
Our team joined the event for its final two days, which included the session on “New High-Intensity Laser Applications in Health”. This session brought together researchers from leading European institutions to discuss emerging biomedical applications of high-intensity laser technologies, with a focus on laser-driven particle sources — electrons, protons, and heavier ions — and their potential role as complementary tools to conventional accelerator facilities. Presentations covered the current state of the field across different particle modalities and addressed the timelines and open challenges on the path to clinical translation.
This is precisely the context in which Aukelos operates. Our team presented at this session, sharing our perspective on translating VHEE (Very High-Energy Electron) laser-plasma acceleration into compact radiotherapy devices suitable for hospital deployment. Beyond the presentations, Aukelos was present at our booth in the Exhibition Area, where conversations with researchers, engineers, and industry partners provided a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and explore synergies with the wider laser community.
Attending an event of this kind — where the science behind our technology is discussed at the highest level — reinforces our confidence in the direction we have chosen. The landscape is evolving rapidly, and the momentum within the community is unmistakable. Aukelos remains committed to being an active part of this progress, working to turn the promise of laser-driven radiotherapy into a clinical reality.
